Exhibited: J.E.H. MacDonald in Nova Scotia with Lewis and Edith Smith, Dalhousie Art Gallery, 1990, #25.

After the third Group of Seven exhibition in May of 1922, MacDonald spent six weeks near Petite Rivière, Nova Scotia. Lewis Smith, an old friend he planned to visit while there, had just been appointed head of the Art Department at Acadia Ladies' Seminary in Wolfville.

In the exhibition catalogue Gemey Kelly writes "...the local paper announced the arrival at the end of July of J.E.H. MacDonald who 'is spending a few weeks here enjoying the natural scenic beauties of our village. Mr. MacDonald is one of Canada's most prominent artists whose presence here is no doubt due to the influence of Mr. L.E. Smith of Halifax who is spending the summer with us again.'"

In one of many works produced on this trip, exploring the shores of Petite Riviere, MacDonald has focused on an impending storm and the rugged landscape of the East Coast captured in aggressive brushstrokes and a dark muddy palette, highlighted with slashes of light blue throughout the sky.
