This painting is thought to be a portrait of James Carroll Beckwith's first wife, Bertha Hall. They were married on June 1st, 1887 in New York. The location of this portrait was cited as unknown in Intimate Revelations: The Art of Carroll Beckwith (1852-1917) by Pepi Marchetti Franci and Bruce Weber. The first owner of the work was an oral surgeon who lived in New York at the turn of the century. He treated many artists and often traded his services for artwork.
