A Gibeon Meteorite-exotic extraterrestrial paperweight recovered in Africa
Iron, fine octahedrite
Gibeon, Great Nama Land, Namibia
This is a complete iron meteorite from the renowned Gibeon meteorite shower in Namibia. Scientists believe all iron meteorites originated from the core of planetary bodies that briefly existed before breaking apart billions of years ago between Mars and Jupiter-the remains of which are referred to as the asteroid belt. This particular meteorite was part of a mass that was deflected into an Earth-intersecting orbit which approximately one thousand years ago slammed into Earth's upper atmosphere and exploded above the Kalahari Desert before having rained down on what is now Namibia. This meteorite was located by local tribesmen aid of a metal detector. In what is a curious anomaly, the reverse of this specimen is almost completely flat. This meteorite split along its natural crystalline plane-and as a result has became an ideal one-of-a-kind extraterrestrial paperweight. Deceptively massive, and naturally balancing in a variety of orientations, the provenance of this singular example is the Macovich Collection of Meteorites-the foremost collection of aesthetic iron meteorites in the world.
measures 6 x 4 x 2 1/2 inches (155 x 97 x 69mm) and weighs 2314 grams (5 pounds).
