A U.S. Navy officer's sword of Rear Admiral Ammen Farenholt
late 19th century
Straight 28 inch blade etched with scrollwork, one side with Ammen Farenholt, the other with USN and Shannon/Miller/& Crane/New York. Brass hilt of standard pattern, the grip bound in white shagreen and brass wire. Black leather scabbard with brass mounts. Together with associated black leather sword belt with gilt brass mounts.
Condition: Blade with dull grey patina showing some wear to decoration. Hilt fine. Leather with light scuffing. Sword belt with scuffing and some tears, one suspension strap with losses.

  • Note: Rear Admiral Ammen Farenholt, 1871-1956, was the son of Rear Admiral Oscar Walter Farenholt. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and entered the U.S. Navy in 1894. Assistant Surgeon in 1897, served with Dewey in the Philippine Insurrection; Lieutenant in 1900; Commander of the U.S. Navy Hospitals on Mare Island, Puget Sound and Great Lakes, Illinois in the 1920s; Commander of the hospital ship U.S. Mercy, 1921; Rear Admiral, 1926; Inspector of Naval Medical Corps activities on the East Coast, 1930 and the West Coast, 1931; retired, 1936.
