An American eagle pommel infantry officer's saber
circa 1810-30
The 30 inch blade with broad, shallow fuller and 14 inch blued and gilt panel engraved with foliage and panoplies of arms, one side incorporating a Phrygian cap and oval shield with stars and strips and with central unblued panels etched with foliage. Silvered brass stirrup hilt, the quillon with eaglehead finial; languet with eagle and E Pluribus Unum riband; scrolling knucklebow molded with foliage. Eaglehead pommel of Ketland type. Ribbed bone grip. Silvered brass two-ring scabbard engraved with foliage and repeating borders.
Condition: Blade showing some light spotting and small nicks to edge with much of the partially faded blued and gilt decoration remaining. Hilt with generous traces of silver finish. Grip chipped below the pommel. Scabbard showing numerous dents and retaining perhaps 50% of the silver finish. Scabbard four inches longer than the blade and possibly a replacement.
