A U.S. Model 1850 foot officer's sword by Collins & Company
for Tiffany & Company of New York
Slightly curved 30 1/2 inch blade with 14 inch central panel etched and engraved with leafy florals framing US on one side and a panoply of arms on the reverse. Above the hilt a five inch panel engraved and etched with florals and on one side Tiffany/& Co./N.Y. Ricasso stamped Collins & Co./Hartford/Conn. and on the reverse 1861. Brass hilt of standard pattern, the guard pierced with scrollwork and blossoms. Grey shagreen and brass wire-wrapped grip. Blued iron scabbard with gilt brass mounts.
Condition: Excellent blade retaining most original polish and showing some light spotting below the point. Hilt with traces of gilt finish. Scabbard retains much of it's blued and gilt finishes, now showing staining and streaking.
