A fine silver-mounted shamshir by Mesri Mo'alam
mid-17th century
The curved 34 inch blade of Persian origin and showing a fine, dark watered pattern and worked with a deep 28 inch fuller extending nearly to the point and above it with five narrower interrupted fullers. Inlaid in gold wtih a maker's cartouche reading Mesri Mo'alam. Silver guard engraved with florals, the silver-mounted grip partly bound in silver wire, the gripscales applied with silver wire scrollwork; long beaked pommel secured by two domed iron rivets and engraved with florals, the finial with pierced for a chain. Black leather-covered scabbard with silver mounts in the Ottoman style engraved with florals and borders.
Condition: Fine blade has been repolished and shows some light wear to watered pattern. Losses to gold inlay. Hilt showing some filled repairs. Scabbard mounts with scattered dents.
