Professor Gene Isaacson was a renowned art historian and art professor and former chair of the Santa Ana College art department where he was instrumental in shaping the early years of the department. Professor Isaacson is widely acclaimed for his expertise in and extensive collection of African art. Though African art had been his primarily focus since 1970, the year he made his first trip to sub-Sahara Africa, his collecting interests had expanded to include South Pacific, American Indian, Indonesian and Pre-Columbian sculpture.

Professor Isaacson was instrumental in beginning the Santa Ana College annual "Art Week" in the 1970s, and in the 1980s he began publishing the quarterly newsletter, ART FORUM: Issues in Contemporary Art.
