MONTBLANC: Sir Winston Churchill Limited Edition 53 Fountain Pen
Sir Winston Churchill (a dedicated Montblanc fancier) was voted the greatest Briton of all time for his courageous dedication to the cause of freedom. This stout, elegant pen testifies to the great Briton's iron will and determination, while the pen's radiant facets reflect the light of hope he gave to his countrymen in Britain's darkest hour.
The barrel is crafted of 18 karat pink gold, inlaid with black and brown tortoiseshell lacquer bands. The captop is ringed with 53 precious diamonds (to commemorate the year in which Churchill was both knighted and bestowed the Nobel Prize for Literature). The Montblanc star is of lustrous mother-of-pearl. The great statesman's legendary "V for Victory" sign is echoed in the design of the clip. 18K gold nib (size unknown) engraved with Churchill's portrait. An untouched, uncirculated example with black lacquered presentation box still sealed in the original shrinkwrap. Lacks plain outer sleeve. Limited Edition: One of 53.
Bonhams offered an example of this pen in May of this year, and it proved to be the most talked-about and admired pen of the sale, attracting quite a bit of media attention and achieving a world record auction price. This pen's aesthetic and historic virtues, in combination with its perfect size, heft, and undeniable magnetism, make it perhaps Montblanc's proudest achievement in modern limited edition pens. We are delighted to offer this uncirculated example.
Please note that the photo accompanying this lot is taken from our May 2011 sale, as this pen is still sealed and untouched.
- Note: the shrinkwrapped box has been professionally x-rayed to confirm that the pen is present; copies of the x-rays, as well as the original purchase receipt, can be viewed upon request. Pen is #47 of 53.
