Touchmark inside base of John Fasson & Son, London, (w.1782-1798), (PS 11204, OP 1640), stamped J LOCK to rim, single-curve handle with flush terminal, height 9cm; together with a side-spouted quart measure, circa 1820, touchmark inside base of Thomas Phillips I, (w.1795-1849), (PS 1343, OP 3651), crowned WR mark to rim, engraved to drum H Oliver Chequers High Halden, height 15.2cm (2)

  • In the 18th century, the Chequers Inn of High Halden was the haunt of the notorious 'Hawkhurst' and 'Cranbrook' gangs of smugglers.

    The will of Judith Oliver of High Halden, widow, was proved in 1797, and several Olivers are buried in High Halden Churchyard.
