Lot Details
GRAVES, ROBERT (1895-1985, writer and poet)
LONG AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, TO HIS MOTHER, about his children, particularly Sam ('...highly gifted, but very lazy...') and Jenny ('...has the same weakness for being among the elite, but she gets there by the grace and industry & energy of her personality...'), the cause of world wars ('...from a breakdown of the old religious federation of Christendom and the absence of any fixed moral standard among 'democratic' governments. The world was not really morally advanced enough to do without its kings -- even the bad ones acted as breakwaters to popular passion...'), his early certainty about his own career ('...I foresaw my own profession from the start & pursued it through thick & thin, though rated by you & father for wasting my time at Charterhouse in working at it...'), his problems with income tax and general finances, and the delay with his book The Golden Fleece ('...I think that ¾ of the printing works are making aircraft now...'); in much of the letter he seeks to dissuade his mother from spending Sam's inheritance on his whim of going to Cambridge to be with his old school friends, producing a variety of arguments against the proposal, 10 pages, quarto, [The Vale House], Galmpton, [near Brixham, South Devon], 23 May [1944]
