Footnotes

  • Brockhurst was born in Birmingham, the son of a coal merchant. At the Birmingham Art School he conceived an admiration for the linear precision of the panel painters of the Italian Renaissance. He was introduced by Gogarty to Augustus John, whom he considered one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A similar proof in the collection of the Royal Academy was inscribed by Brockhurst in 1942. Gogarty was author of As I Was Going Down Sackville Street, and original of Mulligan in Joyce's Ulysses.
