Lot Details
GOETHE, JOHANN WOLFGANG von (1749-1832, German poet)
LONG LETTER SIGNED ('G'), the address and date at the head of the letter also in Goethe's own handwriting, to [Christian Gottlob von Voight (1743-1819), the brother of the geologist, his closest collaborator and fellow-Commissioner in his activities as a civil servant of the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach], outlining what should be done to put a stop to the debauchery and bad behaviour that disfigures civic life in Jena because of the student riots in the town which actually led soldiers that day to open fire ('..if we continue maintaining the little garrison in a sort of respected position we need not fear that a firearm will ever be discharged again in anger, or a pistol in earnest...there is an incredible activity among the burgesses and their associates here and I believe this would be the moment to banish disorder and laziness from here forever. If there were an intervention from above just at this moment; everyone would begin to feel the value of property. Many individuals are putting money and effort into the place because they find money and effort here, and it would be good if we could open our eyes now to many things which will have to be left for later generations to do if we close our eyes to them. You can see from this that a certain force and propensity cannot be at rest and that, since the French are barring my way to Italy, I should like to be of use in some small way at home...'); Goethe also thanks Voigt for his help with some game for his dining club who will eat it with pleasure; proposes some charitable support for a poor student called Eichelberg in Lobeda 'who has been putting up with more than man can bear in his efforts to learn and achieve something', asking Voight's opinion about whether he should approach 'Serenissimo' on his behalf; asks for a memorandum to send to the lottery in Frankfort commenting 'I have no understanding for these generally disastrous matters which make the general intellect more general and a confused one still more confused. I would not buy it, because there is nothing to be gained'; and in an enclosed memorandum written in the same secretarial hand, beginning 'Gehorsamstes pro Memoria', he asks the addressee (probably the Duke) to help to resolve a dispute between a tanner named Eckhardt and the Jena guild of masons ('...Let us hope that in this case as in so many others it proves possible to remove in a gentle manner the hindrance which holds back the individual, damages the whole, and does not benefit the individual because it paralyses the whole...'), in German, 7 pages in all, octavo, small numeration at head, Jena, 31 May 1796
