GISSING, GEORGE (1857-1903, novelist)
AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('George Gissing'), to his old school friend, Dr Harry Hick (d. 1932), famously calling Hardy's latest novel 'Jude the Obscene', sending him a copy for use in leisurely doses and commenting that though there are 'great & fine things in the book' it suffers from 'Hardy's determination to arraign life'; Gissing also refers to a 'paltry story' of his own just published by Cassells ('...They are puffing it in a shameless way & making the author ridiculous...'), 2 pages, octavo, Eversley, Worple Road, Epsom, 6 January 1896
Estimate:
£2,000 - 2,500
€2,300 - 2,900
US$ 3,000 - 3,800
