GIDE, ANDRÉ (1869-1951, French novelist, critic, diarist, playwright and traveller)
THE PRINTER'S COPY FOR AN EARLY VERSION OF LES NOUVELLES NOURRITURES. Autograph manuscripts of imaginative works by André Gide are rare; only one other has sold at auction in nearly twenty years. Les Nouvelles Nourritures, an important work corresponding to his earlier Les Nourritures terrestres, 'C'est le bilan de la réflexion poétique de Gide en sa maturité...pas du tout un ouvrage intellectuel, mais une oeuvre de nourriture pour l'esprit (D. Moutote, André Gide -- l'engagement, 1991). The full work, the distillation of more than twenty years' reflection, was not published in book form until 1935 when Gide meant the book to be a testament of his old age. A number of fragments had appeared in journals beforehand. The present text, published in Littérature in March 1919, was the third of these. It was the first to use the title Nouvelles Nourritures.
