ELIOT, THOMAS STEARNES (1888-1965) and WYSTAN HUGH AUDEN (1907-1973)
THE GREATEST POETS OF THEIR GENERATIONS MEET: this important photograph records one of the very few times (perhaps only the second) that Eliot and Auden met and spoke to one another. Auden states that he and Eliot first met at the time he left Oxford, c. 1928 (Michael Newman, 'The Art of Poetry No. 17', Paris Review, 1974). An example of this photograph is in the National Portrait Gallery and it was illustrated on the back cover of Mark Gerson's National Portrait Gallery Exhibition catalogue, Literati, 1996.
