Footnotes

  • This large photograph was taken at the same shoot as the famous image (wearing the same attire) that was taken in May 1940 and used on the World War II poster with the legend 'Let us go forward together', the phrase he used in his first speech as Prime Minister on 13 May 1940.

The presence of Process or Flake white in the upper left-hand corner of this photograph makes it virtually certain that it was intended to be re-photographed. Such retouching would not show on the new photograph. This strongly suggests that the present photograph might well have been prepared as the source for the wartime poster but for some reason was discarded in favour of the very close image (a different tilt of the head) that was finally used.
