Footnotes

  • This finely modelled medal was made for members of the Beggars Benison Club. The Club is thought to have been founded in 1739, but this medal dates from 1822 or 1826 since it bears the number 5826 on the obverse. Like the Free-masons, the Beggars' Benison Club dated its diplomas and medals from the creation of the world i.e. 4004 or 4000 BC. See previous lot.

The medal or badge is described as very rare in Medallic Illustrations of the History of Great Britain and Ireland, British Museum, reprinted by Spink and Son, 1969, number 89 (McElroy, 'Literary Clubs and Societies'; The Scotsman, 13 September 1883; Grant, Old and New Edinburgh; Alexander Ferguson, The Dawn of Scottish Welfare and Life of Henry Erskine, 1882; Scots Magazine, November 1748).
