  • VENETIAN SCENE. The picture in question was, Turner told Mr McCraken of Belfast, 'Going to the Ball - sun setting and the moon rising over Venice...the Campo Santo with Boats and masqueraders proceeding to the City' and was 'Painted for a gentleman of King's Lynn'. Wethered had purchased Pluto and Proserpine which had been exhibited in 1839 (A.J. Finberg, The Life of J.M.W. Turner, 1939).

    Letters by Turner relating to identifiable pictures are uncommon.
