The original of this self-portrait was the result of a request from Artsite in Bath who had asked a number of artists to work on images of themselves for a book. It forms part of his ongoing project (started in 1966), A Humument: A Treated Victorian Novel, now published in several editions. Tom Phillips decided to use this image as the entrance / lottery ticket for a cricket match to celebrate his birthday at the Oval Cricket Ground in May 1987. For this purpose he had a lithographic version made, which was further worked on and printed on specially selected paper. The present example, from his own collection, has been augmented by his signed autograph inscription.
