PORTRAIT BY WALTER TITTLE (1883-1966), drypoint etching, half-length, smoking a pipe, signed in the plate by Tittle and in ink below the image, also inscribed by Tittle as being the 4th trial state, very fine, framed and glazed, size of image 9 ½ x 9 ½ inches (24 x 24 cm), overall size 16 x 15 inches (41 x 38 cm), [1931]

  • Walter Tittle was one of America's greatest portrait artists. He studied under William Merritt Chase in New York. During his successful career, Tittle lived and worked in both England and the United States and became a member of the Royal Society of Arts, London, the Society of American Etchers, the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Print Makers' Society of California. His work in etching, lithography and painting include such famous portraits as Joseph Conrad, Arnold Bennett and George Bernard Shaw. Although he rarely numbered his original lithographs, engravings and etchings it is known that Tittle's prints were usually published in editions of only thirty-five impressions. Today the lithographs and etchings of Walter Tittle are included in the following collections: the Library of Congress and the National Gallery, Washington, DC, the Art Institute of Chicago, the New York Public Library, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
