Footnotes

  • Coburn recorded in the introduction to Men of Mark, 1911, that Belloc 'came dashing up in a taxi from a debate in the House of Commons, with a pocket full of papers and a head full of ideas. He talked to me of many things...and then whisked away in the cab which he had kept ticking at the door...When the prints were done he asked me to tea at the house [of Commons]...' Coburn personally supervised the creation of his photogravures on his own copper plate press. Belloc subsequently sought to insist that he should own copyright in the portrait and sole right to agree to its reproduction; he later relented and shared the copyright with Coburn (A.L. Coburn's Men of Mark: Pioneers of Modernism, p. 58). Belloc wrote the introduction for Coburn's first book of photogravures, London, 1909.
