RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('W Ralegh.'), TO ELIZABETH COUNTESS OF SHREWSBURY, 'BESS OF HARDWICK', making a lengthy and elegant apology for neglecting her in the period of his disgrace [following his recent clandestine marriage to Elizabeth Throckmorton] being able only to present 'the withered le[a]ves of an unprosperus and blasted fortune' and emphasising his continued wish to honour and serve her despite his 'forgettfullness', 26 lines plus signature, 1 page, folio, two small holes (one in blank area), integral address leaf, 1.7 cm wide strip cut off down the fore-edge of address leaf, autograph address 'To the right honorable the Countess of Shrewsburye', contemporary endorsement 'Sr W: Raleigh to my La:[dy]', with '8 march' added to the endorsement in another contemporary hand, Mile End [where his brother-in-law, Sir Arthur Throckmorton, owned a house and where he could keep an eye on shipping], Ralegh's virtually intact armorial seal, Mile End, 'this 8th of marche' [1593]
