  • AN UNCOMMON IMAGE OF JOYCE. Josef Breitenbach, a self-taught photographer born in Munich, was a political activist and opened a photographic studio there, but was forced to flee Germany. He went to Paris in the 1930s where he photographed Joyce, Brecht, Max Ernst, Kandinsky and other artists and authors. In 1941 he fled to America where he became a photo-journalist and worked as Chief of Still Photography for the United Nations Korean Relief Association in Korea and Japan. He also photographed John Steinbeck.
