JAMES, PHYLLIS DOROTHY, Baroness, 'P.D. James' (b. 1920, novelist and public servant)
A portrait made on the same occasion as the present one with the sitter looking to the left is in the National Portrait Gallery.
Lucinda Douglas-Menzies recalls: 'Portrait taken March 2nd 1990 in Holland Park, London, and exhibited at Portraits of Luminaries at The Minories Art Gallery, Colchester, Essex in May 1990. All the 24 portraits were of people with East Anglian associations. Half way through the sitting I asked P.D. James if there was any prop we could include in the portrait and she suggested her Crime Writer's award dagger and went off to fetch it. I was looking down through the waist level view finder of my camera and suddenly saw her silently moving towards me with the glinting dagger in her hand and my hair stood on end at the back of my neck. I recovered myself and this was the next shot.'
