Lot Details
JAMES, HENRY (1843-1916, novelist, O.M.)
UNPUBLISHED AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('Henry James'), TO THE IRISH NOVELIST FORREST REID, commenting on Reid's first book, The Kingdom of Twilight, praising the first half ('...The very commendable source of its interest seems to me to be that...you see your subject where it is -- in the character & situation of your young man -- that is in the development & spectacle of these, & that, so seeing it, you stick to it with artistic fidelity & consistency...'), but stating that for him Reid loses his subject, its 'observed character & its logic', after the parting with the woman by the sea; he emphasises, however, that there are elements of beauty and sincerity in the book that will remain with him; he also compliments Reid on his 'beautiful hand', 2 pages, quarto, Lamb House, Rye, Sussex, 16 May 1904

Footnotes

  • JAMES ON FORREST REID'S FIRST NOVEL. No letters by James to Forrest Reid are printed by Leon Edel in The Letters, 1974-1984. Forrest Reid was an early and lifelong admirer of Henry James and he dedicated his second novel The Garden God to James.
