HUGHES, TED (1930-1998, poet, O.M.)
THE AUTOGRAPH DRAFT OF HIS TRIBUTE TO T.S. ELIOT, an address on the occasion of the unveiling of a blue plaque at 3 Kensington Court Gardens, London W8, on 26 September 1986, with extensive revisions, deletions and insertions, preserving numerous readings refined in or omitted from the printed text, 7 pages, folio, 26 September 1986

Footnotes

  • HUGHES ON ELIOT. This important address was first published as T.S. Eliot: A Tribute, in an edition limited to 250 copies, privately printed by Faber and Faber, 'Completed in August, 1987' and subsequently reprinted in Ted Hughes, A Dancer to God: Tributes to T.S. Eliot, 1992.

This manuscript was written at Roy Davids's desk at 77 Addison Gardens, W14, on the morning of 26 September. Later that day Valerie Eliot gave Eliot's cuff-links to Ted Hughes.

Included are photocopies of typescripts of Ted Hughes's 'A Centenary Toast to T.S. Eliot'. The full text (of which an abbreviated synopsis was delivered at the Centenary Dinner for T.S. Eliot, in L'Ecu De France, on 26th Sept. 1988), inscribed by Ted Hughes on the first page '"Apologia pro Eros as St Sebastian" for Roy love from Ted 23rd November 1988'. The first two and the last four paragraphs of this do not appear in the text given in Winter Pollen; 'Introduction to a reading of The Waste Land, Palace Theatre, Sept 25 88', signed by Ted Hughes at the head of the first page and inscribed on the last page 'For Roy with love Ted 23rd Nov. 88', 5 pages, folio
