PASTERNAK, BORIS. 1890-1960.
PASTERNAK INTERVENES FOR A GROUP OF PERSECUTED WRITERS.
Autograph Letter Signed ("B. Pasternak") in Cyrillic, 1 p, 8vo, n.p., February 6, 1936, to Alexander Sergeevich Sherbakov, with autograph envelope, toned.
In full, translated: "Please do something to change the decision of the revision commission: it appears unfair to me and wrong not only in the case of E.N. Chebotarevskaywhere it is scandalously obviousbut regarding others who were fired. Why destroy what was created under such hardship?" Brave letter written at a time of Stalinist purges. Babel, Mandelstam, and myriads of other writers lost their lives in this period. Most of Pasternak's writings were suppressed, and Doctor Zhivago was not published in the U.S.S.R. until 1987.
