Footnotes

  • Provenance:
Previously sold Christie's New York, January 20, 2005, lot 709.

These chairs are believed to have been commissioned for the J.P. Morgan residence located at 219 Madison Avenue. While there was also a commission for the New York residence of Mary Jane Sexton Morgan, the second wife of shipping and railroad magnate Charles Morgan (1795-1878), period limited descriptions of furniture style mention silver, metal and mother-of-pearl-inlaid rosewood furniture.

For period photographs of the interiors of the Mary Stuart (1883) and Jack Ruppert (1881-1883) residences which display chairs of this design, see Artistic Houses: Being a Series of Interior Views of a Number of the Most Beautiful and Celebrated Homes in the United States, New York, 1883-84.

An identical chair is in the collection of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute, Utica, New York.
