    齊白石六十歲左右始行「衰年變法」,一掃其早期畫作中八大山人、石濤、徐青藤等人的身影,別具一格,成為其藝術人生中之重要轉折。齊白石畫蟹風格之一變再變,亦正是其變法進取精神的絕佳體現。齊白石畫蟹,五十多歲時只畫一團墨而看不出筆痕。而後六十多歲時改畫三筆,此時其畫蟹風格開始定型,但其三筆不分濃淡,尚缺甲殼質感。直到七十歲以後,三筆濃淡有別,蟹殼凹凸質感明顯,神形俱似。

    湯瑪斯•威廉姆上校1948年向齊白石本人特別訂製的這幅〈簍蟹〉,正是齊白石晚年畫蟹成熟風格的典型體現。先用濕墨連三筆畫出頭胸,三筆之間濃淡有別,畫出蟹殼凹凸不平之感。再畫蟹腿,三節一筆寫成,運筆爽快挺拔,獨具又圓又扁的硬殼質感。群蟹形象生動,有如橫行於市,頗具動感。

    齊白石畫螃蟹的寓意眾人皆知,乃是承襲他所推崇的徐渭遺意,借螃蟹特有之橫行姿態,來諷刺世間某些不法之徒的醜態。在山東畫報出版社2000年出版《白石老人自述》一書中,齊白石寫到,「民國三十三年(甲申,一九四四),我八十四歲。我滿懷積忿,無可發洩,只有在文字中,略吐不幸之氣......又題畫螃蟹詩:『處處草泥鄉,行到何方好!昨歲見君多,今年見君少。』我見敵人的泥腳愈陷愈深,日暮圖窮,就在眼前,所以拿老鼠和螃蟹來諷刺他們。」

    威廉姆上校二戰期間負責為中美兩國蒐集日本情報並立下汗馬功勞,可以想見,齊白石畫給威廉姆上校的這幅描繪竹簍旁邊已然窮途末路的群蟹,應當也是別有寓意吧。
