A carved 'gaoshan' figure of a seated luohan, by Zixiu
Early Qing dynasty
The creamy-white and russet-red flecked stone exquisitely carved in the form of a luohan depicted carrying a sutra scroll in his right hand, seated on a simulated rockwork cushion carved from yellowy-beige stone, his facial features rendered with extraordinary skill, conveying a wry and worldly expression, adorned in an elaborate robe open at the neck and extending over the knees, intricately incised at the hems with foliate scroll against a wave ground, and inlaid with semi-precious stones, depicted leaning against a small, gnarled rock on which stands a lion-mask bronze censer filled with sand for incense sticks, the reverse side inscribed 'zixiu' in zhuanshu.
