A carved 'shan bodong' group of Pindola, by Yang Yuxuan
Early Qing dynasty
Exquisitely carved in the form of the 'tiger-taming luohan' depicted seated in a relaxed position with his left hand clasping the mane of the acquiescent beast, his right hand a fly whisk, his face naturalistically rendered in a relaxed, humorous expression with intricate detailing, adorned in a loose fitting monastic robe open at the neck, the creases of the folds skilfully conveyed, the hem of the robe intricately incised with a foliate scroll against a wave ground, the reverse signed 'yuxuan' in 'caoshu', the 'tiger' evocatively conveyed with bulbous eyes, snarling mouth and flaring nostrils, the luxuriant mane conveyed through deftly incised lines, the underside of the sculpture showing one of the luohan's shoes, the beast's hind legs and several irregular lines suggestive of the robe's creases, the stone of a mottled mahogany-red and caramel brown.
5.5cm wide.

    Yang Xuan, 'zi' name Yuxuan, was a native of Zhangpu in Fujian province. In the Jianpu provincial gazette, it is said that Yang Yuxuan particularly specialised in stone carving, especially figural carvings, animals and vessels, and that everyone wanted to acquire one of his works. In Min Xiaoji, Zhou Lianggong wrote of Yang Yuxuan: "The excellence of his knife work is the equivalent of that done by supernatural beings".

    A figure of Avalokitesvara by Yang Yuxuan in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated by Yang Boda in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji. Diaosu Bian 6. Yuan Ming Qing Diaosu, 1988, pg. 143, pl. 154, is described, pg. 44-45, where the author points out that the style of carving the robes, and the cut of the knife itself, is exceptional, in that the cut is diagonal, as opposed to the perpendicular style of most Qing carvers, resulting in a more powerful, realistic effect.

    The following four figures signed by Yang Yuxuan are clearly authentic examples of similar exceptional quality to the current figure, and lot 274 in this sale:
    除編號274外,其他刻有楊玉璇款例子有:

    - the aforementioned tianhuang figure of Avalokitesvara (11.5cm high.) in the Palace Museum, Beijing (fig.1)

    - a beige figure of Pindola (6.3cm long) from the Conner Prairie Museum, to be sold at Bonhams Hong Kong, 25 May 2011, lot 366 (fig. 2)

    - a luohan (5.9cm high), carved from creamy-beige and yellow-beige stone, illustrated by Tsang and Moss, ibid, pg. 86, pl. 45 (fig. 3);

    - a creamy-beige figure of a luohan, illustrated by Sydney L. Moss Ltd., Escape from the Dusty World. Chinese Paintings and Literati Works of Art, London, 1999, no.66 (fig. 4).
