Commentary The subject is a Song dynasty copy of an inscription taken found on an ancient bronze vessel called a jue.It had appeared in a collection of inscriptions published by Ruan Yuan (17641849) in 1804 and again in 1879. Ruan Yuan and theoriginal Song dynasty recorder of the ancient inscription did not agree on how to read the characters (see Ruan Yuan 1937, juan5, p. 279), so the translation given in the caption above is in a sense arbitrary. In any case, on the snuff bottle Ruan Yuan's name for the vessel is given in clerical script on the right side of the ancient inscription; the inscription is followed on the left by "Engraved by Xinzhou at the beginning of summer in the bingshen year"; the foot is also impressed with a seal bearing the artist's name, Xinzhou.Thedate is best interpreted as corresponding to 1896, for we are surely dealing with the Yixing potter He Xinzhou, who is known to have worked with the calligrapher Mei Tiaoding, who lived 18391906.
