The first engraved and inlaid in silver hirazogan with a branch of plum blossom, a poem engraved on the reverse, signed Nobuyoshi saku; the second inlaid in shakudo with a flight of geese beneath the gold moon, signed Goto Mitsumasa with kao. (2).

    Nobuyoshi is an art name for Isobe Isshu, a student of Ikkin: see Haynes, Index, no.H 01956, where a similar example is recorded.

    Goto Mitsumasa (1836-1904) was the second son of Goto Benjo, a nephew of Goto Ichijo and worked in both the classic Goto style and that of his uncle: see Haynes, Index, no.H 05239.
