1972 Yamaha 266cc TD3 Replica
Registration no. JMK 711K
Frame no. DS7 107790
Engine no. DS7 118158
This replica of Yamaha's historic 250cc racer is based on a 1972 YDS7 roadster. The frame has been modified by removing the pressed steel rear mudguard stay and welding in a TD3-style tubular loop, while a robust lock stop has been welded to the headstock together with a fairing mount. Front forks and yokes are RD350A, fitted with new seals and taper-roller steering head bearings. The swinging arm has been re-bushed and new NJB racing shock absorbers fitted.
The engine incorporates a rebuilt crankshaft boasting new con-rod kits, main bearings and seals. Both barrels have been ported and bored to 56mm to accept Honda MTX/MBX 125 pistons and the cylinder heads re-profiled with squish-type combustion chambers. Other noteworthy features include an up-rated clutch, total loss ignition system, 28mm Mikuni carburettors and dent-free Allspeed Formula 3 exhausts.
Both wheels have been rebuilt with flanged aluminium rims. The front is RD350A with disc brake
and opposed piston calliper (same as the early TZ) while the rear wheel is YDS7. Avon race tyres are fitted front and rear. The fairing and tank were acquired new from Mead Speed, complementing the Maxton-type seat, and the entire ensemble has been painted by Dream Machine in 'Kenny Roberts' livery. Aluminium footrests and hangers were specially made to suit the frame and exhaust mounts. There are lots of other period modifications and the bike appears to been built with great care and attention. A small quantity of spares comes with it to include new piston kits, levers, footrests, alternative sprockets, plugs, etc plus a spare 350cc engine. Accompanying documentation consists of a Swansea V5C document, Dream Machine's invoice and an information sheet listing fuel mix, jetting, ignition timing, ring and squish clearances, spark plug requirements, etc. TD3 replicas such as this one are simple to maintain and share many parts from the early RDs, making them great bikes to parade or race.
