Footnotes

  • A fastback Spitfire powered by the 2000 saloon's 2.0-litre six, the GT6 arrived in October 1966. Like the Spitfire, it inherited what was essentially the Herald's chassis and running gear, which had already proved capable of handling six-cylinder power in the Vitesse sports saloon. A comfortable ride was considered vital for the all-important North American market so the GT6 inherited the Herald/Spitfire's softly sprung rear swing-axle, though the latter would be superseded by lower wishbones on the Mk2. At the same time the engine received a power boost courtesy of the TR5 cylinder head and 'hotter' camshaft, maximum output increasing from 95 to 104bhp. Produced only for the 1973 season, the restyled, last-of-the-line MkIII adopted the contemporary Spitfire's simpler 'swing spring' rear suspension. Fast (100mph-plus) and stylish, the GT6 well deserved its 'mini E-Type' sobriquet and today is one of the most sought after of post-war Triumph sports cars.
Dating from the final year of production, this example was sold new via Macharg, Rennir & Lindsay Ltd, Glasgow and acquired for the Collection in June 1979. 'NGB 568M' is finished in Canary Yellow with brown cord seats and matching carpets, and has the correct steel wheels. Last run 10 years ago, the car currently displays a total of 37,000 miles on the odometer and is presented in generally good condition. The original purchase receipt, a Triumph GT6 handbook, expired MoT (March 1982) and an old-style Swansea V5 come with it. Sold strictly as viewed.
