Footnotes

  • Launched in Britain in January 1937, the daringly streamlined "split-screen" Ford V8-78 was basically a right-hand drive version of the American V8-78. This model, which had more than a passing resemblance to its upmarket cousin, the Lincoln-Zephyr, was built at Dagenham between January 1937 and June 1938, with production totalling 4,331 units. It was perhaps the most handsome of all the epochal Ford V8 line. "Easy-action self-energising" cable brakes replaced the rod-operated braking of earlier V8s.
Most British-built V8-78 Fords had four-door saloon bodywork, although a handful of Club Cabriolets were also produced. With a top speed of 87mph, the V8-78 was one of the fastest British family cars, and offered remarkable value for money at a basic list price of £230.

This Ford V8-78 was a genuine "barn discovery" when discovered in a disused cart store on the outer reaches of the Milligen farm and was subsequently sold through Bonhams to the current vendor in 2004 (Lot 160, Goodwood Revival 2004). Originally bodied as a four-door it was adapted by local coachbuilders Tooley and Young into a pick-up for use on and around the farm. It is currently lacking its gearbox and carburettor.

The current vendor has done little more than give the pick-up a wipe over and put some air in the tyres. It is sold strictly as seen.
