'Unlike the Shadow which, while cosseting you in luxury and comfort, required a good deal of concentration to drive quickly, the Spirit is endowed with enough feel and response, matched with stability, to make driving on all types of road a real pleasure,' - Motor. Announced in the autumn of 1980 and typically Rolls-Royce in so far as it represented evolution rather than revolution, the Silver Spirit was based on the preceding Silver Shadow II to which it bore a distinct family resemblance. The Shadow's floorpan was retained and powertrain differences were minimal, the Spirit's chief advance over its immediate forebear being the heavily revised and improved type of rear suspension that had first appeared on the company's two-door models. The styling too came in for revision, with a lower waistline, increased glass area and a more modern angular look; rectangular headlights graced the front of a Rolls-Royce for the first time and the oft-changed radiator became wider and squatter. Inside, the Crewe firm's exemplary standards of equipment and finish were maintained, the most noticeable change being the adoption of separate rear seats and the re-instatement of folding picnic tables. Corrosion free and with its original interior in 1st class order, this quite exceptional Silver Spirit was acquired in February 2008 by the recently deceased owner, a well respected Yorkshire racehorse trainer, who bought it to replace his Silver Shadow, Lot 301. The car comes with full service history from Rolls-Royce Motors London Service Centre (1984-1986) and various official Rolls-Royce agents (1986-2001), there being 19 such services recorded. Since August 2002 (at 77,975 miles) the Silver Spirit has been maintained by Silver Chalice Motor Services, Rolls-Royce & Bentley Specialists of Park Garage, Derwent Street, Sheffield, the last occasion being in October 2007 at 79,613 miles. The odometer currently displays a genuine total of 81,000 miles. Finished in blue with blue-piped cream leather interior, 'CSU 212' comes complete with mats, over-rugs, tool kit, all instruction manuals and the service booklet. The car is currently taxed, MoT'd to April 2012 and is offered with four expired MoT certificates and Swansea V5C document.
