One of Eight produced, Ex-Chris Eubank 1994 Aston Martin 6.3-Litre V8 Vantage Volante Chassis no. 60148 Engine no. 89/60148/A
'The Volante is the new soft-top version of the Virage incorporating the latest changes made to the full Aston range. Beautiful hand-built craftsmanship abounds in this most aristocratic of convertibles.' - Fast Lane.
Ahead of its forthcoming twin-supercharged Vantage, Aston Martin offered 6.3-litre conversions for the existing 5,340cc V8-engined Virage coupé and Virage Volante convertible. When first released, the '6.3' produced 456bhp at 6,000rpm and 460lb/ft of torque. The resulting performance gains - 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of up to 174mph (depending on the axle ratio) - required serious chassis modifications that included sports suspension, 18"-diameter OZ alloy wheels shod with Goodyear 285/45ZR18 tyres, and double-vented/cross-drilled 14" front disc brakes. Outwardly the '6.3' was distinguishable by flared wheelarches and new front, side and rear valances. Automatic transmission was standard on the Volante, the original three-speeder being superseded in 1993 by a new four-speed dual-mode (normal/sport) unit. The five-speed manual gearbox continued to be available as an option.
This right-hand drive V8 Vantage Volante is to full 'wide body' 6.3-litre specification, incorporating that package's special suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres in addition to the Vantage Front and Rear ends. An automatic transmission model, the car was constructed to the order of Chris Eubank, then current Middleweight World Champion Boxer and is one of only eight 6.3-litre V8 Vantage Volantes built. Current owners of this model are said to include HRH Prince Charles and the Sultan of Brunei, who has two. '60148' was the third example completed at a cost of circa £274,000.
The car was purchased by the current owner from Aston Martin Sales Ltd, Newport Pagnell in March 1996, by which time it had covered circa 2,000 miles only. Chris Eubank only sold the Volante as super middleweight boxing arch rival Nigel Benn had ordered the same model! Almost all of the subsequent 24,000 miles have been incurred on long tours within the EU, many with the AMOC. The odometer currently reads almost 26,000 miles. '60148' has been serviced by Aston Martin up to 2002 and since then by Oselli Engineering, and has never been involved in any accident.
The car is as supplied by Works Service, with no additional modifications. The original customer specified an 8-speaker, 3-amplifier sound system, described by the suppliers as the 'Elton John' system as it was he that first specified such a combination, which includes two 10" sub-woofers housed in a special compartment underneath the rear seating platform. The 6-disc CD auto-changer unit is located beneath the central armrest between the rear seats. A false boot floor houses the three amplifiers and crossovers, while an additional two batteries, serving the sound system only, are located in a well below the amplifier distribution unit in the boot. The additional batteries are charged by the alternator through a splitter that gives preference to the car's main battery, also located in the boot.
Other noteworthy features include a special chromed radiator grille, twin front fog lamps, Vantage headlamps, vehicle tracker device, and twin reversing and fog lamps concealed in the rear valance. The hood is electrically operated and finished in special fawn mohair with Alcantara headlining. The hood cover is trimmed in red-piped magnolia leather and is stored within a black soft case in the boot, which also contains the original tyre puncture repair equipment. Both doors, the rear side quarter-lights and the rear screen are glazed with tinted privacy glass. The car is finished in Suffolk Red with red-piped magnolia Connolly leather upholstery and dark red carpets. The dashboard top, roll and gear lever are trimmed in black leather while the dashboard and door panels are of walnut with satinwood inlay.
