  • Provenance:
Private UK collection; acquired from a private Parisian collection.

Whilst in Berlin Mualla fell in love with a German girl who he referred to as 'Cecile', however it was not meant to be and the romance broke down following the artist's return to Istanbul.

That experience, coupled with the death of his mother to Spanish flu in 1918 and his hatred of his step-mother, meant Mualla's relationship with women was built on extremely uneven foundations. His feelings towards them can be glimpsed in his depictions of nudes which are usually small in size and utilise a limited colour palette.

The present lot includes two such stark yet vibrant line drawings of women in angular poses with characteristically expressionless faces, as was the norm in Mualla's depictions of such subjects.
