During the nineteenth century, Spanish dollars were frequently used as currency in China's seaports. Snuff bottles made in a variety of materials imitating these coins were produced in relatively large numbers. The coins minted during the reigns of either Charles III (1760-1788) or Charles IV (1788-1808) of Spain were most commonly copied. For a further discussion of this group see V.E.Graham, 'Coin Snuff Bottles', Journal. The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, Spring 1988, pp.4-10.

For further coin bottles, and an original 1779 Charles III coin, see lots 55 and 131 in this sale.
