Footnotes

  • François Lesage was an ébéniste working in Paris from approximately 1855 until 1890. His workshop was first located at 70, rue Amelot and later moved to 91, rue Truffaut. He is related to the prolific ébéniste Antoine-Nicolas Lesage (1784-1841) who made furniture for kings Charles X and Louis-Philippe.

This table descended in the Supino family, originally of Pisa. Renato Supino, born in Pisa in 1896, was a connoisseur and collector of Flemish tapestries and 17th and 18th century French furniture. His uncle was the Chancellor of the University of Pisa and his renowned collection of medieval gold coins is still in the collection of that university. Renato became general manager of the London office of the Assicurazione Generali and married Muriel Davies, a well-known British designer. In 1929 they settled in Paris, where he was on the board of Louis Dreyfus & Cie. It was during this period that they expanded their collection of French furniture to furnish their hôtel particulier in the town of Chatou. The offered lot was purchased from a dealer in Paris during that period and it was thought to be early 18th century.

The family fled France in 1940 after storing their possessions in warehouses. Their residence in Chatou was requisitioned by the Wehrmacht for use as an officer's club. Muriel, now pregnant, and her three children were hidden underneath a tarpaulin in a milk cart until they reached the Vichy territory. They were fortunate to receive visas and tickets on the now famous refugee passage from Lisbon to New York on the French liner Normandie. The family took up residence in Manhattan, and in 1943 purchased a 1760 Dutch residence: the Demarest House and grounds. The furnishings of the Paris residence were sent to Demarest House after the war and remained there until 1988. Renato's youngest son, Peter Forrest Supino, now a California resident, inherited this table.

In researching the table, it was discovered to have the Lesage stamp. Although now dated to the mid-19th century, the two writing slides may be later additions, and possibly date to the early 18th century.
