Period red morocco, covers gilt ruled with pomegranate devices at corners, centering floral and foliated cipher "MA," spine gilt in compartments with floral, diamond and star motifs. A few leaves with short, clean tears at foot without loss, recornered.
Covers gilt with the monogram "A," thought by the Earl of Rosebury to have been Marie Antoinette's monogram, catalogued as such by him, bought as such in the 1930s for actress Norma Shearer, who starred in the 1939 MGM film, Marie Antoinette.
Provenance: bookplate of Archibald Philip, Earl of Rosebery [1847-1929], and with his manuscript note tipped to front free endpaper: "I think this book from the monogram must almost certainly have belonged to Marie Antoinette"; estate of Norma Shearer.
