Period full burgundy morocco gilt, spines gilt in compartments, dentelles gilt, silk doublures. Original autograph material with some fold splitting and occasional fading (detailed list available on request); volume spines sunned, else fine.

Extra-illustrated set of the large-paper, limited edition, the first series being no 459 of 500 sets. The 40 volumes comprise biographies of the most eminent Americans to date, from Benjamin Franklin and George Washington to William McKinley. Bound in to the front of each volume (excepting the index) is a pertinent original signed document or letter, including those of 11 Presidents, Signers of the Declaration, members of the Continental Congress, Chief Justices, et al.
