Clemons was the editor of the Times Literary Supplement and Welty's designated literary executoruntil he predeceased her. In a letter dated January 18, 1971, she mentions her regard for Ross MacDonald, and that she is proud to have her novel Losing Battles in the Times top 12 for 1970. In a letter dated August 20, 1973, she discusses watching the Watergate Trials on TV: "I'm so tired of it, and can't wait for it to start again."
