Footnotes

  • This limited edition guitar is Gibson's tribute to the 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard Eric Clapton played with John Mayall and the Blues Breakers in 1965/66. Produced by Gibson in December 2010, this guitar numbered 1 is one of only fifty signed and inspected by Eric Clapton and hand-built by Gibson Custom. These Gibson 'Beano' Tribute Model had all; been pre-sold within a month of their production.

The story of a twenty year old Clapton, in search of a 1954 Les Paul gold top like the one Freddie King played, coming across a five year old 1960 cherry sunburst Les Paul in London's Charing Cross Road has been told many times:
An extract from 1989 Guitar World interview with Dan Forte:
"DF: Is the Bluesbreaker-period Les Paul the one that was stolen?
EC: Yes, that one was stolen during rehearsals for Cream.... I went through quite a few and until about five years ago, never got one that was anywhere near the original one in terms of the neck shape and the fingerboard...All during Cream I didn't really have a favourite guitar because I never really replaced the Les Paul, and I was constantly searching for something to come up to scratch."
