Footnotes

  • Provenance:
From the photographer to his brother, Dr. Julius Stieglitz; from him as a gift to Ila and Howard Church; by descent to present owner

This is an early print that pre-dates Stieglitz's association with Camera Work. In 1894 Stieglitz took a break from his editorial duties at American Amateur Photographer and traveled to northern and southern Europe. This image of Katwyck, Holland, is one of the few images he took that he was pleased with. After returning to the States, he briefly worked at the Heliochrome Engraving Company, the photo-engraving and printing firm purchased by his father. Stieglitz printed this image there as a photogravure. It was later reproduced in Camera Work, No. 12, October 1905, as a halftone.
