'The Death of Henri IV and the Proclamation of the Regency' (a detail) from the Medici Cycle charcoal and red chalk heightened with white on paper 11 x 15 3/4in (28 x 40cm)
PROVENANCE: Mordant Cratcherode; William Howgate; Sale, Parke Bernet, New York, Nov. 25, 1949, lot 77 (as Attributed to Rubens).
It has been suggested that the present drawing was probably executed by the same artist who created a group of red and black chalk copies, heightened in white, after Rubens, now in the Albertina. These are inv. no. 8.207 (Holy Family), 8.209 ('Beheading of St Paul'), 15.098 ('Lion Hunt'), and 15.100 ('Dido and Aeneas') and reproduced in E. Mitsch, Die Rubenszeichnungen der Albertina, Vienna, 1977, nos. 81, 82, 106, and 108.
