Footnotes

  • Introduced in the early 1990's , the reference 5050 was the first retrograde date perpetual calendar watch put into production by Patek Philippe. It was inspired by the unique reference 96 retrograde perpetual calendar made by Patek Philippe in 1937.

Reference 5050 retains the flat bezel Calatrava case but was in production for only about 4 years. It was replaced by the reference 5059 with its "officier" case. (Lot 180 in this sale) The watch was made in very limited quantities in yellow, pink and white gold in addition to a very few in platinum. Two different dial configurations were offered: baton markers or Roman numerals.

The present lot has the rarest configuration with its platinum case and Roman numeral dial. It is believed that less than twenty reference 5050's were made in platinum and less than half of these were fitted with a Roman numeral dial.
Please note that the present lot is presented in its original sealed bag. Cover picture is a stock photograph.
