A builders model "Amapala"
A builders' model of the S.S. Amapala
the hull built up from the solid, and painted with a pink bottom and white topsides, with inset portholes, painted name, draft markings at the bow and stern, hull cut outs, anchors and other details. The decks in veneer, painted white with the planking lines drawn in India ink, and detailed with chocks, bollards, anchor windlass, ventilators, deck railings, ladders, deck hatches, fore mast with cargo booms and winches; built up center cabin structure with promenade deck, boat deck, bridge with bridge wings and canopies, boats on davits (4), binnacle, funnel painted in Standard Fruit & Steamship Co. livery, and numerous other details. Displayed on a mahogany plinth with a brass builders' plaque, within a black painted wood framed glass case.
104 x 20-1/2 x 37 in. (264.1 x 52 x 93.9 cm.) cased.

  • Ampala was a British built steamer in service between 1924- 1942. She was built by C.S. Swan & Hunter Ltd., in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and owned by Standard Fruit & Steam Ship Co. She had principal dimensions of 364.9ft LOA x 50ft beam x 29ft draft; and weighing 4,148 tons.
